Women were forbidden to create portraits of men in the past, to gaze at a man's face for a long period of time was considered improper; I bet, men were just afraid that, if a woman looks for too long at a man she would start laughing and change her portrait to a caricature. :P

This is from a portraiture class I am taking at work. When the model saw that I was drawing him so grumpy, he tried to keep a lighter, happier expression for the rest of the session, but too late, no favors, grumpy looks funnier in a caricature.

Hutch, if you are reading this, I saw what you did to my portrait of Rick :D, I am still laughing and I want a copy.

it is because I place some old paintings and new next to each other in this blog. I am growing as a painter and it shows.

The cartoon.

Isn't it odd when a cartoon character looks just like you? I heard a theory that every one has a double some where out there. My double just happened to be Alice from a russian version of Lewis Carroll's story. The animation came out in 82 when I was 7, that is just very odd.

One friend of mine asked me to post some of the sculpture I did in the past.
Just to dilute the drawings and paintings and to make it more interesting, here are some of the best pieces I made.
This is a portrait of Jean-Luc Picard played by Patrick Stewart, I sculpted it for a 12 " collectible figurine.
Body was made by another sculptor.

This is one of my old paintings again. Soon I am going to run out of old things to post and going to be forced to start working on something new.
They recommend you not to paint portraits larger than natural human head size. I ignored it, and I don't regret it :)
My teachers also told us to use as little black paint as possible,
I ignore that too. Actually in my opinion my work greatly improved when I started to forsake some of the things my school taught me, I don't want to sound arrogant or anything, it's just when you brake away from some one's ways in art you start to be more you.

Finally I finished my project. Yay!
I should mention that the client's house is Colonial style and her request was that the murals have a more traditional older look that matches the house’s interior.
Photos came out the best to my ability, please don't judge me on that; I wish I was a better photographer .
Some of the elements in the design were requested by the client, like the little laughing dog had to resemble the house pet Yorkie, Winston, hence the “W” on his pocket. Idea for the large clock in Hickory Dickory Dock came from a clock in the house; the little teddy bear in the Mari's pocket and the lady bug have to do with client's nicknames.
I used some children’s books for reference and inspiration.
It was a very interesting project and a great learning experience.
I think I would do it again, but after a long nice rest.

Here are the final images of the first 2 walls, I am currently working on the third.
I was going to post step by step process of my work, but unfortunately all of the images that I took in progress are gone.
Something happened to my camera's memory card, it erased all of the photos.
I am enjoying this project tremendously! Learning as I go.
My husband taught me to use a large airbrush on background areas, to get color gradations and make the edges fade.
Also all of the lettering was printed through Kinko's also my husband's suggestion, it saved a LOT of time. The Winken and Blinken and Nod were inspired by Disney's animation by the same name.

I am currently working on a freelance project, it's a mural on 4 walls in a baby nursery room.
I think this project will take all my summer weekends. I have done large paintings before, but never murals, so there is going to be a lot of trial and error going on. SO if anyone has any advice, please do give, I need it.
The babies, it's twins, are due in August, I have very little time to complete everything. By the way there are 4 walls but 6 different compositions all based on Mother Goose Nursery rhymes.
These are sketches for 2 walls, I have no idea how it is going to look like in a large scale. O my goodness what have I got myself into....

For those who don't know what it is, it's a research were kids (in this case girls 7 to 8 years old) are asked about certain toy products.
We sat behind a two way mirror and observed their reactions. It was fascinating!

It's fascinating to find some very cool old photos at antique stores, they are so intriguing and rare, I have few very beautiful ones that have such hunting images. I make up stories about people on those photos and try to imaging what their lives were like.
This is one of them, the card had already turned silver, it had coffee cup stains and fly droppings. O that Photoshop can do wonders!

I did this sketch second after the little oval painting. There were 20 min left in the session, and I decided not to waste it and do one more quick mono-tone. I actually think it came out better than the first one, on which I spent 2.5 hours. Go figure.
